Keratin is a natural protein in your hair. Once the keratin from your hair is depleted your hair is exposed to damage. Your hair becomes frizzy, brittle and unmanageable. Thanks to the new innovations in the hair treatments, now you can restore health of your hair to its natural beauty. Keratin treatment is fast becoming the most popular treatment to restore the health of the hair.

In Keratin treatment, keratin is artificially infused to your hair to makeup for the lost keratin in your hair. It splendidly works to make your hair smooth, shiny and frizz free. It increases the volume of individual hair strands and makes it strong. So the hair breakages reduces, so does the overall hair fall.

Keratin treatment is not an alternative to Hair smoothening or straightening treatment. If you are primarily looking for straight looking hair, then better opt for Hair straightening treatment instead of a Keratin treatment.

The hair straightening effect of keratin treatment is is very unpredictable. As a side effect of the Keratin treatment your hair may become straight anywhere between 30% to 70%. But this result varies from client to client and depends on the individual hair texture. SINIMA salon does not give any assurance whether your hair will become straight or not, or how long the straightening results will last or not.

Also Keratin treatment is not a scalp treatment. It does not promote hair growth or causes hair fall.

Keratin treatment is not harmful to your hair. It is not a strong chemical treatment  like Hair smoothening. There are no permanent changes happening to your hair due to Keratin treatment.

Keratin treatment can be harmful to you and the therapist depending on the brands. Some Keratin brands contains formaldehyde which is a known carcinogen. During the ironing phase lot of fumes are generated, if inhaled it may cause health problems. 

Generally saying, the treatment even if it is formaldehyde version may not do much harm to client as he/she is exposed to it only for a short period of time. But that is not the case with the therapists and employees working in a salon. In a busy salon the therapist and other staff will be exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis which can pose serious threat to their health.

In SINIMA salon, we use only 100% formaldehyde free Keratin products.

Keratin treatment takes around 3 to 5 hours to complete, depending on your hair volume and length.

STEP 1 : HAIR ANALYSIS

Keratin treatment starts with an analysis of your hair by therapist.

First your hair is checked for any henna residues. If there is thick henna coating on your hair, the Keratin treatment outcome will be highly unpredictable. It is because henna coating will prevent the Keratin protein from penetrating your hair. Light henna coatings can be removed by washing your hair multiple times using an anti residue shampoo.

Then your hair is analysed for any previous color treatment. Most keratin products tend to fade color treated hair 1 or 2 shades lighter. If your hair was pre-lightened/bleached to apply the color, then the chances are high that you will end up with a completely color washed out hair.

STEP 2 : HAIR WASH

For the Keratin protein to successfully penetrate your hair, hair cuticles need to be opened before applying the Keratin product on your hair. To open the cuticles of your hair, therapist will wash your hair 2 or 3 times using a clarifying shampoo. Each wash takes around 10 min each. Once the therapist is convinced that your hair cuticles are open, therapist will take you to a styling station and will dry your hair.

STEP 3 : KERATIN PRODUCT APPLICATION

Keratin cream is applied to your hair and waited for close to 1 hour.

STEP 4 : IRONING

Each hair strand is ironed 16 to 18 passes to seal the keratin to your hair.

STEP 5 : HAIR WASH

Depending on the keratin brand, your hair may be washed same day or after 24 hours.

Generally Keratin treatment lasts 35 to 45 washes. With each wash a little bit of keratin is washed away from your hair. So the effect of keratin treatment fades away with each hair wash. If you are a person who washes your hair 2 to 3 times a week you can expect the results to last 3 to 4 months. Use of sulfate free shampoo and conditioners are a must to last the results for 3 to 4 months. You can redo the Keratin treatment every 3 to 6 months depending on how you feel about your hair.

How long the results lasts is really depends on how you maintain your hair after the treatment. For maximum results you have to

1) Limit hair washes to 2 to 3 times a week

2) Use only good quality sulfate free shampoo and conditioners

3) Handle your hair gently

4) Instead of oil, only use Keratin hair serums

A large number of salons in Kerala are selling hair smoothening service, branded as Keratin Treatments. The best way to identify a Smoothening treatment from a Keratin treatment is its odor. Smoothening products have a strong odor but Keratin products have a pleasant smell. Also no neutralizer is applied on hair after ironing in Keratin treatment. This is because there is no strong chemicals to neutralize in Keratin Treatment like in Smoothening treatment.
