The term “Balayage” comes from the French word "balayer," meaning to sweep. It's a term that refers to the way the color is applied. Balayage is a technique where hair color is painted onto the hair to create a graduated, more natural-looking highlight effect.
When it comes to hair coloring we can say it is the most popular hair coloring technique in the last few decades.
There is a Balayage to match any personality. Balayage can be very subtle to very loud depending on your choice. Your hair stylist can vary the saturation levels and blending to adjust the visibility to your preference.
For an untrained eye, an Ombre and Balayge may look all the same. But a Balayage hair coloring is judged by 3 paratmers.
The roots are darker and the ends are lighter. The transition from darker to lighter color is smooth and gradual. This property is same for Balayage and Ombre.
This is the key parameter that differentiate a Balayage from Ombre. In Balayage, to create a sun kissed effect, darker colored hair is mixed with the lighter colored hair. In Ombre the entire hair is either darkened or lightened. In highly saturated and loud Balayage application it may more look like an Ombre. But look closer, you will find darker hair among the lighter hair at mid length and at ends.
In Balayage to create a sun kissed effect there is no need of a highly saturated color application. You only need to create subtle shade differences to mimic the low and high lights along the length of the hair. But in Ombre generally high saturation levels are achieved at the ends.
A Balayage effect can be created in numerous ways. Complexity of a Balayage can vary from very simple to very complex application that requires multiple sittings to achieve the desired results.
This is the most common and simple balayage technique in which high lift colors are directly applied to hair without any pre-lightening. This is not a true balayage method as it is almost impossible to achieve a gradual hair lightening of color along the hair length. Also, only few color choices are available with this method and color corrections are difficult.
In this method the hair is pre-lightened using the sweeping technique then the hair color is applied at the hair wash station. The advantages are this technique offers more control over the entire process. It is easy to achieve gradual lightening and color correction.
This method is the most advanced and offers the highest level of control to achieve the desired results. In this technique different shades and applied at the root, mid level and at the ends.
This is a Balayage of funky semi-permanent colors. The technique used in this balayage is either classic balayage or global balayage depending on the color choice.
Using the right shampoo and conditioner is a must to maintain your expensive Balayage color. Opt for products that will protect your color instead of the ones that strip it away. The L’Oreal Vitamino Color shampoo and masks are formulated to protect your hair color.
To show case your Balayage hair, the best way to style it is in Beach waves or loose waves. The natural looking coloring will draw attention to the evolution of the colors and blending along the lengths. Whether your hair is naturally wavy or not, simply apply L’Oreal Siren Waves styling cream on your damp hair and blow dry. Then curl the lengths on 2-inch sections and run your fingers to break up the curls for a natural finish.
